I want a big screen so I can fit more stuff on it. However, it seems that's not really possible, because the resolution of my laptop screen is x, and when I plug it into an external monitor, that will also run at x?SETUP EXTERNAL MONITOR RESOLUTION, REFRESH RATE \u0026 FRAMES-PER-SECOND on Mac OS X
So, I won't actually be able to fit more on the screen - everything will just be scaled-up proportionately. Am I right in that? Second question, how big can I go? Third question, is it possible for my laptop to output a higher resolution than x to an external monitor? For example, my photos are usually around x pixels. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.
Hi, I just bought a brand new 15 inch MacBook Pro.
First of all, the monitor works great in MacOS. But as soon as I boot into windows 10 under Bootcamp, I immediately get this very unstable connection. No matter what I do re-plug the cable, restart windows, turn monitor off and on, re-install drivers, etcthe screen is still black, only the MacBook pro's LCD will work.
Sometime if I try really hard and got lucky, the monitor will work for a while, just as good as in MacOS. But once I restart the computer, it lost connection again and the same thing just repeats. This thing is driving me crazy. I kinda give up using the monitor for bootcamp now, only use it when in MacOS. If anyone have the same or similar issue like mine, please share it.
I really want to be able to get the monitor working in Windows as I do plan to play some games on that bigger screen. Thank you! Posted on Jul 21, PM. Page content loaded. Jul 22, AM in response to rouging In response to rouging. Jul 22, AM. Jul 23, AM in response to kaz-k In response to kaz-k.
Thank you for the info. I spent some time dig into this issue and seems that using Display Port to connect the monitor into my laptop will just do the trick.
But again, this is a Mac, so maybe it just not intend to work smoothly with Windows, even it is a windows on a Mac hardware. Jul 23, AM. Communities Contact Support. Ask a question Reset. Many people use external displays with their Maceither to mirror their display to a larger screen, or to expand their screen area for additional productivity. As good as this sounds, sometimes problems can occur with external display that will require attention to get fixed. With a gist of some of the things that could have gone wrong, do any of these sound familiar to you? If so, follow along as we talk about some potential fixes to these issues.
It can also mean that there is a power issue, that the brightness is too low, or something else. Is the display supported? For many 4K displays, you need to be using a Mac with a graphics card powerful enough to push that many pixels. The general rule of thumb is that most modern Macs manufactured after will support such a high resolution but not all of them.
Apple has an online support document that lists all of the Macs that are compatible with 4K displays. Is your brightness turned all the way down?
Silly me — I just forgot to turn the brightness back up. If you live where Earthquakes are common, or you have rambunctious kids running around all the time, plugs are destined to work their way out of their sockets.
One of the things Apple recommends you try if you are using an Apple notebook, such as a MacBook, MacBook Air, or MacBook Pro is to connect the power adapter to give it additional power. A loose connection will keep a proper electrical connection from occurring and can cause issues with your external display. Are you using the right port?
Make sure your display s are plugged in to the correct port s. If possible, remove one of the adapters and avoid chaining them together.Application letter for work immersion abm student
Does the display work with other connections? Try using another computer or another video source and see if the display works with that video connection. Is your video cable bad? Try using a known good video cable and see if the problem persists. Often times, the video cable connecting the external display to your Mac just needs to be replaced. Problems with display resolution will cause problems with your picture. With resolution issues, your picture may look blurry, or scaled incorrectly.
Typically when you plug an external display in to your Mac for mirroring, your Mac will automatically adjust its own display resolution to fit the external display. Not all resolutions translate well to others, and this will cause scaling issues that make some things look elongated or too tall. Try setting your display to use the default resolution for the display from the same preferences pane discussed above. If this ever happens to you, Apple suggests booting into Safe Mode on your Mac to see if the settings can be reset to default.
Sometimes, an updated version of macOS may include drivers pre-installed, so always make sure macOS is up to date too.Is your external display not working on macOS? Try out these tricks below to get things back online.
Any tech expert knows that dumb mistakes are as frustrating as they are ubiquitous. Restart your Maccheck physical connections, reseat cables. Is the brightness on your display turned all the way down?
Check for those kinds of issues. They can often lead you astray. Take the USB-cable-in-Ethernet-port problem. The cable can look perfectly plugged in at a glance, but unless you remove the cable and try to plug it back in, you may not notice your error.
Do you know that your Mac supports this monitor? Displays are not a static world.
Their standards are constantly tweaked and updated to include new features demanded by consumers and professionals. The most popular display connectors have multiple different versions, all of which can look the same from the outside. Only the newest cable versions can support the newest features.
They include simple computer chips that power their newest capabilities. If your monitor turns on and gets a signal, but the picture looks bad, the display version is a good thing to check. HDMI is on revision 2. USB-C is the worst: the cables can look identical but have completely different capabilities. DisplayPort 1. Also, you should avoid chaining video adapters together. Apple notes that doing this with one or multiple external displays can cause problems. Remove one of the adapters and see whether the display works.
Select the highest available option, typically at the bottom of the scrolling list. Display resolution and refresh rate can also be limited thanks to display connectors. VGA, for example, can only support a maximum display size of x Fit this by switching to a different connection standard.
The more-common HDMI 1. You can check these standards before buying a monitor. Your Mac hardware also plays a part. The higher-end devices with discrete GPU chips can drive the most pixels, while something like a MacBook would be far less capable, even though they could theoretically connect to the same display with the same cable. If one monitor displays significantly different colors than the other, you can use color calibration tools to fix the problem. Click Calibrate to start the on-screen calibration process.
Follow the instructions to create a new calibration from your display. Your email address will not be published. Notify me of follow-up comments by email. Notify me of new posts by email. Macbook Screen Flickering – 7 Quick Ways to Fix it
You will see me write about iPhone and Mac on this site. Your email address will not be published. As I haven't found much info on using a 12" MacBook with external monitors but have found some problems I thought I would post my experiences here for the benefit of other searchers:.
After updating to El Capitan version VIDEO: I am only able to get a x scaled resolution to fill the screen, which is a little blurry but fine for desktop tasks - selecting scaled x or "best resolution for this monitor" results in a windowed appearance, with black bars to the right and left. I have not as yet found a solution to achieve ultrawide at the native resolution but would appreciate one. Full video HD YouTube is generally good, though gets a little choppy now and then.
AUDIO: Holding Option and clicking on the speaker icon in the Menu bar reveals selectable option to output audio to the device monitor. On this monitor, there appears to be an issue receiving the signal from the Macbook when another device is plugged into another port. In my case, a PC plugged in to the DisplayPort would "shut out" the Mac audio signal but ONLY if the PC was outputting audio via external speakers, not the monitor a lot of trial and error to discover this.
But having an external speaker hooked up via the pc mobo's 3. Something going on through the DP connection perhaps. This enables the Macbook to drive a 4K monitor at 30Hz, which is still a little laggy, but workable enough to be productive for word processing, surfing, etc.

May 23, AM. I am experiencing occasionally flickering on my external monitor with my Macbook 12 inch, throughout the day every few hours. Reading your info, I took heart that switching to MHL connection instead might solve the problem. USB 3.
External Display Not Working on macOS? Here’s How to Fix It
But the monitor does not leave sleep mode and does not get detected. Any advice? How did you do that? Jun 2, PM. I have exactly the same problem, but I'm certain it's software related since I'm also running Windows 10 in bootcamp and without the black screens.
It only takes a minute to sign up. The monitor's optimum resolution is x 60Hz and RDM shows this as an option. However, when I try to use that resolution, my screen looks like this which is clearly not right it looks impossibly pixellated and really hurts my eyes, you can barely see anything on the screen.
My monitor and adaptor can display x so that would appear to not be the case here. The options for the resolution in Displays all work perfectly various ones from x up to x when Alt-Scaled but then it jumps up to x How can I add x to this list, as presumably that would display clearly?
Otherwise, you have a great choice of software for that, like switchResX :. Why hassling with Apple's inbuilt screen settings, when there is so much more to get and much easier, too? With SwitchResX you get back control on your screen — or screens even! There are plenty of inbuilt options Windows evidently could read the data just fine, which is why it worked perfectly every time. Where Apple don't develop plug-and-play drivers for monitors I assume and hadn't added a profile for mine, it couldn't recognise it.
In the end, it was a relatively simple fix. Here are the steps I followed some very basic knowledge of Terminal is necessary for the second half, it's mostly common sense though. If your EDID data isn't being read at all by anything, you'll need to either use another monitor that broken one won't ever work properly or have the defective one replaced etc. I don't have enough points to add comments, but I just had the same issue and found the reply by Dan Grove extremely helpful.
This reply is in regard with the step 2 of his proposed solution. I've spent the last 4 hours at least fixing that issue on macOS Sierra. Now, following Dan Grove list of steps see his post aboveI would bring some clarifications as follow:. Step 3 — For those who don't know what Hex is, below is a screenshot. You will have to remove the surrounding parts highlighted in red to only keep the Hex part highlighted in green.
You don't necessarily need to have the 3 boxes ticked, just click on Parse Edid and check if the information on the right reflect what your screen device should be — e. Step 4 — This is the tricky part which got me confused.
The tutorial is asking for you to output the result of the following Terminal command in a text file ioreg -lw0and search for various strings within the said file.
The tutorial asks you to look for the IODisplayEDID string but my external screen did not have any in the ioreg output which is certainly why is was not working.
